Glass Eye tie slide

Green Glass Eye tie slide by Justine Austen
$275
Available in-store or online

Justine Austen graduated from Gold & Silversmithing with honours from Monash University in 1998 and attained a fellowship from the gemmological Association of Australia in 2004. Working as a contemporary jeweller and miniature sculpture artist Justine creates exhibition pieces, commissions and a number of limited production ranges sold through various galleries nationally. Balancing somewhere between fine art and kitsch Justine’s creations seem quirky, play-full, absurd and offbeat. The transformation of somewhat random objects and materials into new works dictates the technique, depending on the piece and the envisioned outcome. Her style is graphic, using a simple and strong visual, icongraphic language that she has developed drawing on historical and modern elements and references.

DH108 Swallow cufflinks by Dan McGill

DH108 Swallow cufflinks in sterling silver by Dan McGill
$250
Available online or in-store

Dan McGill has been working in jewellery trade in Melbourne since 1991 and has been running his own business for 12 years. The purchase of some antiquated casting equipment from a retired jeweller several years ago has given him full control over every stage of the creative process from the chaos of molten metal to the finished piece. This independence, desire for excellence and dedication to his craft has led to a distict style which can only be described as a work by Dan McGill.

Christmas Beetle stick/lapel pin by Justin Siow

Christmas Beetle stick pin hand cut, folded and heat coloured titanium by Justin Siow
$264
Available in-store or online

Justin Siow graduated from an advanced Diploma of Jewellery Technology at NMIT in 2009. Drawing inspiration from a childhood filled with origami, science fiction, puzzles and vintage toys, Justin uses both precious metals and contemporary materials to make his creations. He relishes technical challenges and treats the act of making as a puzzle in itself, finding the best design solution to produce objects that are both entertaining and functional. His latest work focuses on the efficient use of materials. Using principles that are akin to the design of origami models, Justin starts with a single rectangular strip of metal, into which a design is hand –cut and then folded to produce a three dimensional piece. These self-imposed rules create the challenge of finding the many limbs, mandibles and wings in the material as well as achieving the ultimate goal of minimising waste.

Tie Fighter cufflinks by David Parker

Tie Fighter cufflinks in oxidised sterling silver and cubic zirconia by David Parker
$390
Available in-store or online

David Parker produces jewellery that embodies a uniquely modern spirit. Beautifully developed pieces range from elaborate constructions to elegantly simple designs; often concealing their underlying complexity. The Melbourne based designer brings very strong technical knowledge and innovation to his handmade, bold contemporary designs.

His Lord Coconut range features a number of pieces that explore the more irreverent facets of David’s personality. In this collection David has incorporated inspiration from numerous areas and periods of his career. For that reason you will find musings from pop culture, history and even humour sitting along side the more recognizable aesthetics of sculptural and architectural forms.

David likes to see his work as an interpretation of art deco architecture and modern sculptural influences. He is heavily influenced by the shapes and forms of these movements. His metal work reflects the bold forms, sweeping curves and clean edges often found in both these movements. David brings a very modern aspect to his work, as he feels it's important to embrace new design and to be relevant to his own time and place.

Peace Dove cufflinks by Vikki Kassioras

Peace Dove with Wreath cufflinks in sterling silver by Vikki Kassioras
$275
Available in-store or online

I am fascinated by classical mythology and in its ability to shed light upon the human condition. In my work I use myths to create alternative stories that the viewer can place their own experience into. My methodology of making is strongly influenced by material, informing process and often form. My intention is to link present and past through the use of material, symbols and stories referencing a shared collective understanding and incite connections on a personal level for the viewer and wearer of my work. I want to make work that invites the viewer to dream.

Buloke Malachite wooden ring by Australia Handcrafted Timbers

Buloke Malachite wooden ring by Australia Handcrafted Timbers
$185
Available in-store or online

Tim Murray was born in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, where, after excelling in woodwork and art in high school where I came first in the woodwork section of the Royal Melbourne show in 1968. I started Australian Handcrafted Timbers in 1994, after a redundancy, producing hand turned bowls, lidded containers, frames, carved emu eggs and the like.

My passion for the beauty of Australian timber and my relationship with timber is more than a job, it’s a passion, some say it’s an obsession. Each piece of wood is chosen for the colour and grain, with a story of mystery and indescribable beauty which carries more than just the physical traits, more than that the wood carries mysterious secrets of the earth’s deeper spiritual meaning.

I do not see cracks in timber as flaws but as part of the character of the wood, a thing of beauty and uniqueness to be accentuated with sterling silver, stone and Australian opals. These techniques have led to my own unique style of work. My jewellery offers an experience with nature, a powerful and intimate reunion with elements from the earth with their own unique beauty that graces the body with nature’s natural warmth.

Tough Guy cufflink/jewellery box by Innocente

Tough Guy cufflink/jewellery box in Huon pine, powder coated steel and stainless steel by Innocente
$308
Available in-store or online

Innocente boxes started with a surprise gone wrong. My partner said she wanted a jewellery box to organise all of her jewellery which at the time was a bunched up mess. I decided to surprise her by building one for her. I was half way through it when she told me she was going to go shopping for a jewellery box. I showed her what I had done so far and proceeded to finish it. One design led to another and has resulted in the designs you see today.

All of the boxes are unique, and individually numbered. I use a variety of timbers including Huon Pine, Black Heart Sassafras, Tasmanian Oak and Red Mahogany. The boxes are powder coated, some designs are edged in polished aluminium and all are trimmed in velour. I use stainless steel fittings throughout each box.

Huon pine is one of the slowest-growing and longest-living plants in the world. It can grow to an age of 3,000 years or more. It is found in western Tasmania, on the Central Plateau and in the Huon Valley. Today, the tree is wholly protected and cannot be felled. However, wood on the forest floor, or buried in river beds, remains usable after hundreds of years and is still prized by modern woodworkers.

Paws ring by a.l.i.alexander

Paws ring in sterling silver by a.l.i.alexander
$462
Available in-store or online

My jewellery is usually made with silver or gold sometimes with pearls, I also use non-precious materials with the precious.

Although I would love to be, I am not a bench jeweller, most of my work is made in wax by me first, cast, and then finished by others I work full time in the technology department at an Officeworks store in Melbourne Australia and live in a flat in the centre of the city; these give me ideas for my designs. I have been redesigning my living space, including furniture. The Mother of Pearl of Wisdom - Don't put it down... sideboard has sterling silver and pearl handles and the label jewellery comes directly from my proximity to labellers at work.

Words feature in a lot of the pieces and also in my collecting. I have a small collection of sweetheart jewellery (made by troops during war) and I collect autographs where people write, talk or sing about “they”.

I like to think that my jewellery is comfortable to wear if not always effortless for the wearer - the vase brooch looks best filled with water and flowers, and the label jewellery has to have a label printed and attached by the owner.
