The making of FOSSIL by Beth Croce of Bioperspective

Beth Croce contributed FOSSIL to the Charles T Fairthorne Travelling Collection of Natural History Curiosities exhibition which is on now until 10 Dec.

This piece is inspired by tangible legacies of prehistoric times, diamonds and dinosaur fossils, whose inauspicious beginnings are dull carbon and decaying bodies. Forces of heat, time and pressure can transform ancient detritus into valuable objects. Likewise heat and centrifugal force were used to transform the hand carved wax model for this piece into solid sterling silver. The 37 diamonds set along its backbone melds the fossil and the gem as representatives of the endurance of objects of beauty.
