New work by Emily Becher

Emily is a jeweller based in Melbourne working from a shared studio in Kensington’s Ironside Studios. Her work is quite varied with several divergent ranges that each explore distinctive concepts allowing for experimentation with different techniques.

Her heavily textured range stocked by Lord Coconut explores the tangible experience of acquisition, the tactile nature and connection that one can encounter with their choice of adornment. Her work investigates the playful nature of interacting with moving elements, the sparkle of light reflecting from surfaces and the base characteristics of surface texture that allow one to visually and physically engage with ones choice of embellishment.

Emily graduated from NMIT with an Advanced Diploma of Jewellery in 2012 with High Distinction. This follows an academic trail of consistency to perform at a high level winning numerous awards, the most recent recognition received in 2012 from the Gold & Silversmiths Guild of Australia for Best Hand Skills, and has since been accepted as a Fellow member of the Guild in 2013. Her work has been selected for a range of prestigious exhibitions including Contemporary Australian Silver & Metalwork Award 2013, Graduate Metal ’13 and Contemporary Wearables ’13.

New Stock from new jeweller Helen Hadfield

Self taught, Helen makes beautiful, unique jewellery using old Australian postage stamps. Most people keep these miniature art-works locked away. I believe they should be adorned and appreciated for all the world to see. Fascinated by the history of each piece it is shared with the wearer so they know where their new jewels originated from. Helen has been creating such treasures for over two years now, ever learning, ever discovering, ever making.

Highly Recommended

I recently purchased a sterling silver ring online. Although I found it difficult choosing a ring based on what the pictures looked like, the ring exceeded all expectations. From placing a order till post delivery Mark was constantly in contact letting me know what was happening as I had a needed the ring within a few weeks. When I received the beautifully crafted ring by a Tasmanian designer I was astounded by not only the ring but the packaging. The overall customer service and ring was just fantastic! I highly recommend the store and will return.

Great Service, Amazing Ring

On a recent trip to Melbourne, my fiancé and I visited this store and were welcomed by Mark and his extensive collection of interesting and amazing rings. Mark was extremely knowledgeable about all his products and gave us plenty of time and attention to pick the perfect ring. Upon receiving the ring in the post this week, we could not be happier. The ring was absolutely perfect! We were also pleasantly surprised by the amazing packaging, the ring found its home in the core of a vintage art book. The book is so lovely, we are going to use it to hold both our rings for our ceremony. Mark provided us with great service (and ring!) and we highly recommend Lord Coconut.

‘Indelible – inspired by tattoo art’

A group exhibition of men’s jewellery at Lord Coconut

Exhibition opening: Wednesday 22 May 2013      5.30-7.30pm
Exhibition: 23 May – 8 June 2013

Melbourne’s foremost men’s jewellery emporium, Lord Coconut, continues its love affair with handcrafted jewellery. ‘Indelible’ is a group exhibition of men’s jewellery inspired by vintage and contemporary tattoo art.

Each of the exhibition pieces, submitted by Australian jewellers, artisans and designers have been inspired by vintage tattoos, dragons, sailor jerry, roses, celtic symbols, and anime. The variety of pieces presented within the exhibition are as personal as your own choice of tattoo.

Participants include: Justine Austen, Emily Belcher, Sebastian Cilento, Metal Couture, Beth Croce, Silver Cyanide, Petr Hanzak, Frances Rose Jewellery, Windfall Jewellery, David Parker, Tim Peel, R M Perry, Melanie Rice and Roxanne Watts.

Silver Cyanide has submitted a number of pieces such as the Faith, Hope & Charity neck piece based upon a classic tattoo flash design. The Silver Cyanide jeweller explains “My range is inspired by all things Rockabilly, Retro and Vintage. With the explosion of Sailor Jerry style vintage tattoos, my pieces are a perfect addition for Dames, Dolls and Guys looking for this particular aesthetic”.

Emily Becher, who submitted a sterling silver necklace titled “Complementary Opposites” explains “The ‘Yin Yang’ symbol is a common tattoo, reinvented through the ages and cultures from its traditional black and white symbol through to more detailed designs incorporating dragons, fish, tigers, water, fire, amongst various other combinations. My necklace explores this ubiquitous symbol that is as indelible in our minds as much as it is on our skin”.

At the other end of the spectrum, many people have tattoos that they are no longer proud of, especially those found on the fingers and knuckles. Melbourne jeweller a.l.i.Alexander has created a series of Tattoo Frame rings designed to either hide the tattoo in question or to frame it on the finger to give the tattoo new life. Alexander explains “we all do things in our youth that we later regret. I hope my rings address the need to hide or re-invigorate one of life’s little indiscretions”.
