ARTIST STATEMENT

My jewellery is usually made with silver or gold sometimes with pearls, I also use non-precious materials with the precious.
Although I would love to be, I am not a bench jeweller, most of my work is made in wax by me first, cast, and then finished by others I work full time in the technology department at an Officeworks store in Melbourne Australia and live in a flat in the centre of the city; these give me ideas for my designs. I have been redesigning my living space, including furniture. The Mother of Pearl of Wisdom - Don't put it down... sideboard has sterling silver and pearl handles and the label jewellery comes directly from my proximity to labellers at work.
Words feature in a lot of the pieces and also in my collecting. I have a small collection of sweetheart jewellery (made by troops during war) and I collect autographs where people write, talk or sing about “they”.
I like to think that my jewellery is comfortable to wear if not always effortless for the wearer - the vase brooch looks best filled with water and flowers, and the label jewellery has to have a label printed and attached by the owner.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Tamara’s love of working with metal began in 2003 at London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Her passion grew from there and she was inspired to do further study on return to Melbourne, gaining her Advanced Diploma in Jewellery at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) in 2007.

Since graduating Tamara has sold her jewellery to Melbournians and tourists alike at the Rose Street Market in Fitzroy and 2011 sees the launch of her label ‘my friend romeo’ - creating both men and women’s handmade jewellery.

Her philosophy to treasure the small things in life builds inspiration for both her label and design work and translates well into making small treasures for others to enjoy. Tamara says, ‘my aesthetic is simple, wearable, understated design. I like to make things I would like to wear and so far, luckily this has proven to appeal to others too’.

Small treasures have come naturally, and the extension into men’s jewellery the perfect fit: ‘I have been producing a limited range of unisex pieces to date – however, I am now testing out both my imagination and my lovely obliging male friends for feedback and modelling'.
We think the men around town are in for a treat.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Puneet Jodhka is a Mebourne based contemporary jewellery artist who graduated from Box Hill Institutute of TAFE in 2009. Inspired by the Traditional Japanese technique of Mokume-gane, she works with different metals like Sterling silver, gold, copper, iron, shakudo ( alloy of 4% yellow gold & 96% copper), Shibuichi ( alloy of 25% silver and 75% copper) and fuses them together to form different patterns. The final finish accentuates the contrast between different metals is done by applying patina on metals (Shakudo becomes black and shibuichi becomes grey). This range evolved through a series of experiments like alloying different percentage of metals together and then applying patina to see what depth of colour is obtained or by fusing number of layers together and carving them. The next experiment would be to try enamel and so on.

Kathleen O’Neill works in a studio on a rural property with beautiful views. Kathleen graduated from Monash University with a B.A.(Craft) Honours under Melbourne’s leading silversmiths. After a short hiatus creating a family, Kathleen resumed her designing and making in 2007. Kathleen’s pieces are organic yet graphic, using a monochromatic palette with subtle colour contrasts. Light skims across the surface of the metals with brush finishes contrasting playfully with hard, shiny burnished edges. Mechanical implements and gentle reference to old and forgotten foundry crafts inform the work, which harbour a slightly comical slant. Distinctive design, each piece is handmade and unique.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Justin Siow graduated from an advanced Diploma of Jewellery Technology at NMIT in 2009. Drawing inspiration from a childhood filled with origami, science fiction, puzzles and vintage toys, Justin uses both precious metals and contemporary materials to make his creations. He relishes technical challenges and treats the act of making as a puzzle in itself, finding the best design solution to produce objects that are both entertaining and functional. His latest work focuses on the efficient use of materials. Using principles that are akin to the design of origami models, Justin starts with a single rectangular strip of metal, into which a design is hand –cut and then folded to produce a three dimensional piece. These self-imposed rules create the challenge of finding the many limbs, mandibles and wings in the material as well as achieving the ultimate goal of minimising waste.
